The Sports Union was founded in 1921 as the Royal Technical College Athletic Club. Since then there have been numerous changes to the name and structure, but officially became part of the Students' Association in 1989 when the merger of the two bodies created our current structure. The most important factor of the Sports Union is that it is run by students for students. Through a system of democratic committees each member has a voice as to how decisions are made. The Sports President is elected each year from the student body for a one year full time (paid) position. Presidents WelcomeHello and welcome to the Sports Union at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (USSU). Here are the Sports Union, we are committed to providing you with all the sporting provision you need. With 44 sports clubs, there should be something for you - and if there isn't pop up and see us in Level 7, The Union and we will help you set one up! The USSU is run by an Executive Committee chaired by myself - your Sports President for 2009-10. After studying at Strathclyde for my degree in Marketing and Human Resource Management for 4 years, I felt up to the challenge of leading you all forward into what is promising to be a very exciting few years ahead! Since becoming a member of the football team in 2005 I have played many social and competitive matches for the University, making the most of my £22 SU membership fee. In the run up to 2014 Commonwealth Games, sport in Glasgow will only be getting bigger in profile and with our new facility underway, the USSU will be striving to compete at the top level. Working closely with Scottish University Sport (SUS) and British University Colleges Sports (BUCS), our competitive teams compete regularly in leagues across Scotland with the chance to progress to knockout stages that could see them competing south of the border! As well as that the remainder of teams and clubs are regularly planning and organising trips away and attending other competitive events, including numerous social tours that are also arranged. So to all the new and potential members I can only say you will not regret joining the SU - it will probably be the best spent £22 of your year ahead! With the promise of fantastic sporting provision, development and social networks it will only add to your experience here at Strathclyde - 'the place of useful learning'. Also, a warm welcome will be given to the returning students. I trust you are having a great summer and are raring to go in September for another fantastic year!
