Scottish Universities Sport (SUS) is a partnership between Scottish Universities, and between Sports and Athletic Unions and Sport and Exercise Departments within those Universities, with the aims of assuring quality in the sporting programme in Higher Education in Scotland and continually developing and improving that programme. Active - Competitive - Innovative SUS's strapline - Active Competitive Innovative - is the organisation's mantra. SUS aim to be active and pro-active in promoting sport and physical activity and its benefits, to provide competitive sports on a range of levels for Scotland's young people in Universities and Colleges, and to be innovative, flexible and dynamic in our working arrangements within the sector. For more information on any aspect of the work of SUS, visit their website.
British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) is the national organisation for higher education sport in the UK. It brings together expertise and experience from two former representative bodies – British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) and University College Sport (UCS) – to provide a unified voice for sport, fitness and physical activity on university campuses. BUCA vision is to enhance the student experience in three key areas:
What BUCS do BUCS works with student athletes, athletic union staff and elected officers as well as professional sporting staff, coaches and volunteers at 153 member institutions. It offers a comprehensive, multi-sport competition structure and manages the development of services and facilities for participative, grass-roots sport and healthy campuses through to high-performance, elite athletes.
BUCS and the Sports Union The Sports Union is primarily involved (through SUS) in the BUCS Scottish Leagues. Following qualification from these leagues, our teams enter the BUCS knockout stages after Christmas. These encompass several different levels including Championship, Shield, Plate and Vase into which the top 16, 16-32 etc teams are automatically entered.
From the results of the league and tournament results, BUCS then calculates the total performance of each university across all sports. So, for instance, winning the Scottish Netball League 1A would give Strathclyde 5 points, and coming second would give us 4 points. The total points score then allows the Overall BUSA Championship points table to be produces. In 2000 Strathclyde were 50th but following continued improvement we have consistently finished in the top 35, with a high in 2005 of 31st.
